What steps are required?
- A person must demonstrate competence with a handgun. The person will be required to complete a safety course I a certified Firearms instructor.
- Each person is required to get and pass a criminal history background check.
- Every applicant is also required to provide a photograph, taken within the last 6 months, which includes the person’s full face, in normal street clothes.
Which type of permit is the best?
In most cases, the best type of permit is a multi-state, non-resident permit. The multi-State non-resident permit covers more than one state. Multi-state means a person does not need to apply, individually, with the states that fall under the umbrella of the permit.
One option is the Virginia non-resident concealed handgun permit. This particular permit allows a person to carry a concealed handgun in over 30 States. Virginia is also the only state that allows people to complete firearms training online, so long as the online course has been approved. Although other states do allow applicants to take the necessary course online they stipulate that an application could still be denied should a person choose to complete the course online.
Who is not allowed to obtain a permit?
There are quite a few reasons why a person would not be allowed to obtain a permit. It is essential that a person investigates those stipulations within their own state. In most cases, the reasons are related to a person who has some type of criminal history.

- A person must be at least 21 years old
- The permit must be presented, upon request, to any law-enforcement officer
- It is strongly encouraged to contact each state a person will be traveling through to be certain the permit will be recognized by that state, laws constantly change
Carrying a concealed handgun puts the person carrying it and the people around that person at risk. It should not be done without serious consideration.
